Product Description 365 reasons to love America! The fife and drum of history mark the time of each passing day. And within their cadence, personalities, conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and nations peal and fade. American history is no different. From the starving time of Jamestown during the Winter of 1609, through the bloody argument of the Civil War, and to today, the United States is a tale best told one day at a time. Best-selling author and educator Dr. William J. Bennett is a master of the story that is the United States. And in The American Patriot's Almanac, Bennett distills the American drama into three hundred sixty-five entries-one for each day of the year. Fascinating in its detail and singular in its grasp of the big themes, Bennett's Almanac will make anyone a fan of history, assembling even some of the most obscure details. Even better, it will make of everyone a patriot.

The American Patriot's Almanac: Daily Readings on America January 7, 2009 Everyone in the US should be required to read this book as we have put our history on the "back burner". As a school counselor, I know that our teachers and children are pressured by federal laws to pass/excell in the areas of reading, math, and science. Therefore, social studies and why we in the US are what we are and how we came to be are left out of the mainstream curricula. What a shame that the last and the current generations do not know about their country. This book is an excellent resource for all of us.
Fascinating History Vignettes January 7, 2009 This book is full of compelling stories about American history, with s different historical event being presented each day of the year. Here is an entertaining way to learn about our country, in easy to read informative snippets. An attractive hardcover binding holds many treasures within, including the documents that help make this country a focus of liberty loving people all over the world. The text of the Gettysburg Address and the Bill of Rights is right at hand here, and the story of Betsy Ross, pictures of the flags of the Revolutionary War, an entry about jazz, another about Labor Day, and the authors' selections for the best 50 All-American movies. I was reminded of many movies I have seen and am inspired to watch them again, and quite a few I have missed and will look for. "Best Years of Our Lives", and "Seabiscuit" are two of the fifty recommended films. For every American and particularly for families that home school the authors, William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb, are especially adept at making history fun. Did you know that St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in the U.S. colonies in 1737 in Boston? Now that is a long and venerable tradition. You will find many lesser known events including the entry for June 13 which has the story of Lafayette and the sentry. August 20 presents "E Pluribus Unum" which highlights for me the strength of the United States, "Out of many, one." We are a nation built by people from many lands, tied together by a bond of patriotism, love of freedom and mutual aid.
Great book for history buffs. January 7, 2009 We saw a interview with the author, on Hannity and Holmes. Looked interesting, trying to refresh my memory in the history of this country. Great book, interesting, would reccommend this to any one.
An American History Daily Reader January 6, 2009 William Bennett and John Cribb have done Americans a great favor. They have compiled hundreds of vignettes from American history and have condensed them into short, readable, one-page accounts in this great book. The stories recounted in this volume are informative, inspirational and even surprising, at times. They will help refresh your memory of your high school or college history classes and even inspire you to search out more information on the events they highlight.
The authors have formatted the book as an almanac, with a one-page reading for each day, along with a listing of significant events that happened on that date on the calendar, along with the year it occurred. Between each month, there are also special segments which offer information on the American flags across the years, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States and a number of other segments.
This book doesn't take the place of a good American History textbook, but I think every American should read it. The book organizes the readings according to the day of the year, but not by the year, so the stories are not in chronological order. The editors have compiled and included a great, but not exhaustive index in the back. It would have been nice to have a chronological index in the book of all the events discussed also.
I am sure that I will be re-reading this book again and again. I highly recommend it to you!
Daily reader. January 6, 2009 This book is a great way to remember what this country stands for. A daily dose of American history untouched by revisionists. Be proud to be an American.
