Three feedback programs--recovery mode, results mode, and body mass index (BMI)--allow you to track the progress of your workout routine. BioGlide motion technology offers a natural-feeling 18-inch stride while the trainer's BioFit design will provide a comfortable feel on the footpads and handlebars. The handlebars also feature grip heart rate monitoring which allows you to track your heart rate while you're exercising.

About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value - sturdy, easy to assemble and fun to use!   January 8, 2009
I researched ellipticals for almost a year before finally deciding on the Schwinn 430. It arrived in a large heavy box and took us almost a month before we tackled putting it together but it turned out to be easy to assemble but it took us 2 hours regardless. All the parts were clearly labeled and the instructions were step by step easy. Its sturdy, glides smoothly and is simple - I didn't want anything with a lot of bells and whistles. This has all you need. The best part - I look forward to using it!

4 out of 5 stars solid performer and quality build but poor heart rate monitor   January 8, 2009
Bought on sale in December 2008 for $539.99 (free shipping), which is $60 less than I could find it elsewhere. Local Schwinn dealers are charging even more. Prior to using the Schwinn 430, I used a Stamina 55-1777 for about two years before it was damaged by a power surge in my home. By comparison, the Schwinn 430 offers a more stable platform. In its three weeks of use, the 430 elliptical has provided comfortable and effective operation. (No weight gain with all the holiday snacking I did!) The levels of resistance are gradual enough to find a workout that's challenging but not too stressful. I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase how Nautilus (Schwinn's parent company) responded to my e-mails about assembly and setup. I am of average mechanical ability, and the assembly took me (working alone) approximately 2.5 hours. However, this does not include the additional hour spent carefully unpacking the box and inventorying the parts to ensure nothing was missing. I consider this time well spent because after I laid everything out (big parts are affixed with L and R stickers, which help) the assembly was straightforward. The assembly instructions were effective and direct, but people who've never put anything like this together will prefer more detailed text and more diagrams with fewer steps shown in each.

SUMMARY
Likes: Smooth motion and fluid operation; ease of use (machine, not computer); comfort; resistance levels and program choices; quiet. (I had one squeak from the right-side wheels after about 4 hours of use, but a few drops of Liquid Wrench silicon lubricant around the nuts silenced it completely.)

Dislikes: Heart-rate monitor is useless, probably due to interference from our wireless home network, cordless phones, sat. TV, etc. The 430's user manual is very clear about this, so at least I know I didn't do anything wrong in assembly. This is a pretty big problem because in this day and age, nearly everyone has RF-emitting devices in their home that will render this computer function useless. Luckily, I have my own Polar monitor, but I shouldn't have to rely on a separate device to receive such basic feedback. The computer's interface could be a little more user friendly. I needed the manual to figure out how to use it properly, but once was all it took.

5 out of 5 stars Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer   January 8, 2009
received the trainer about a week after ordering it. took about 3 hours to put together, no problems, everything fit together nicely, I thought the directions were easy to follow and understand. The machine is quiet and smooth, and can give you an excellent workout. For the money, I would highly recommend this machine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pick   January 7, 2009
I have had this product for about a month. So far it is amazing. I use it 3-4 times a week for about an hour. The machine seems to be well made. I am very pleased with the product. It is definitely a good deal for the price.
