Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Mario's love of Italian cooking and entertaining was inherited from his grandmother and has been passed through the Batali family for generations. Mario's wealth of Italian cooking knowledge was multiplied during his years working at a family-run trattoria in the small Italian town of Porretta Terme. There, he learned the fundamentals of Italian cuisine: recipes should be an uncomplicated blend of only the freshest ingredients and follow the seasonal rotation of produce.

Heirloom-quality signature Italian Essentials Cookware by Mario Batali, the James Beard Foundation's 2005 Chef of the Year. Preseasoned cast iron and durable porcelain enamel disperse and retain heat evenly. A dozen recipes from Mario's Molto Italiano . Cookbook come with each piece. Oven-safe to 500 degrees F. Dishwasher-safe, but hand washing is recommended. 6-Quart Pot: 13" diameter.

4 out of 5 stars That HEAVY Pot   January 7, 2009
This is a marvelous pot for cooking, but I would not have purchased it if I'd seen it in the store and picked it up. It is VERY heavy, and I've learned to protect my wrists by always picking it up with both hands. If I need to clean out the bottom of the pot with a spatula, I have someone else help me hold it simultaneously. If I didn't need to clean it, then I'd never take it off the stove top. It's a challenge, but I love it when it's on the stove with my food cooking nicely inside.

2 out of 5 stars Wish I would have researched more...   January 2, 2009
I bought my Batali pot exactly one year ago from Amazon through a 3rd party merchant. It was my first enameled pot and I did do some research as I was stunned at the price difference between this item and the "better" lines but I only remember seeing very favorable reviews. Cut to a year later--I have babied that pot like no other and it is chipped in 3 places (and discolored without any abuse of cooking temp or contents). Of course, I have no box or anything or I would try to claim that life time warranty. Will definitely not buy anything else with the Batali name (other than cookbooks) as I have had quality issues with other items purchased elsewhere. Pay more for the quality.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money for Le Creuset   December 16, 2008

I bought one, used it once, and some of the enamel chipped off in the dishwasher. I returned it, and the second one was chipped near the handle with a big crack in the enamel as well. They look good but obviously are made on the cheap. My Le Creuset dutch oven is 20 years old and has never chipped--inside or out.

As much as I love cooking in this pot and just looking at it because it is really beautiful, the first time I used it the handle chipped even though it was handled carefully. The second time I used it, I made a lentil soup and the bottom of the pot discolored. It did not burn and I used a low flame but it still discolored. I have used Le Creuset Dutch ovens for years with absolutely no problem. I don't think I will purchase any more Mario Batalia Dutch ovens since they seem to be inferior. I am very disappointed because it is really a beautiful looking pot, especially in the Chianti color.

This dutch oven was purchased as a gift. It was highly successful. Both gift-giver and recipient were pleased. Braised shortribs were prepared shortly thereafter, adding further pleasure.
The product came as described with no imperfections. Packaging was quite adequate.
