Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This film is an intimate and moving portrait of Kurt Cobain, told entirely in his own voice. Based on more than 25 hours of never before heard interviews conducted by noted journalist Michael Azerrad for his book "Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana". The soundtrack does not contain Kurt or Nirvana's music. Says Azerrad, "It's like a mixtape you'd give to a friend or lover to share ideas, not just about music but about your whole point of view. It's to try to show them what you're all about. So if watching 'About A Son' is like seeing the world through Kurt's eyes, then listening to this music is like hearing it through his ears." Artists include Arlo Guthrie, Melvins, Bad Brains, CCR, Half Japanese, The Vaselines, Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid, Mudhoney, Iggy Pop, Lead Belly, REM, David Bowie, Mark Lanegan, and Benjamin Gibbard.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An amazing CD that gives you an even better glimpse into Kurt.   March 10, 2008
There is no music on this CD by Kurt or Nirvana and no bad covers or tribute songs. In fact all of the songs on this album were written before the world ever knew of Nirvana. This soundtrack, a companion to a documentary made from snippets of taped interviews, has music that inspired and was loved by Kurt Cobain. While listening to this CD of music spanning decades and genres I felt that I came closer to understanding Nirvana and at the same time it's interesting to listen to rehear some of these songs as the inspiration behind Nirvana. Hearing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Up Around the Bend" right after Bad Brains takes the song to a new place and makes you look at it differently, and makes you think about Nirvana differently as well.

I think this CD is a terrific way to learn more about Nirvana and maybe learn to see them in a new light as well as get a glimpse into the mind and music taste of a man who knew music and ultimately changed it.

5 out of 5 stars about the man   January 7, 2008

This is the review of the film that I intend to buy when it comes out. Music was good, too, I have not heard actual CD because I purchased it as a gift.
The film was beautifully done; if you have crash on Kurt it will break your heart.
The director was at the screening I went and there was Q & A session. I had to ask who gave him OK to make this film since Kurt is, well, gone.
He said all the tapes with Kurt's voice in it is HIS. He did not need any permission from anyone, I do not know if that is really so, I mean then why, now? After all these years hording hours and hours of Kurt's raw voice. He said it was just by chance that happened now.
Courtney was supportive about it and it does shows in the film the director never intended to exploit anybody, so that was nice, naturally there is no Nirvana song in the sound track but all the songs that Kurt mentions and influenced him in the said stages of his life. There is very few still image of him in the very very end of the film only.
The mill was actually where Kurt's dad worked, the school he went, the room he lived in. It is pure homage about the man and where he came from.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting Too Much   December 26, 2007

I am a Nirvana addict. When they were at their peak was in my late 20s, so I listened to everything they put out. Now that I am older, I still buy anything Nirvan or Kurt Cobain related out of respect and hope it will add to my collection. I have to say this and the Courtney Love bio are the only two disappointments. I do have to say I haven't seen the movie, so maybe that makes a difference. If you want something good, go buy the Nirvana box set, you won't be disappointed.
